A Legacy of Healing
Named in honour of Shri J.S. Gangadharan
In 1978, Dr. J.G. Shanmuganathan and Mrs. Kanakavalli Shanmuganathan established Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore with a simple yet profound vision: to bring world-class surgical care to every citizen. What began as a 17-bed facility with two operating theatres has since grown into one of South Asia's most respected surgical institutions.
In 1991, their sons — Dr. S. Raja Sabapathy (trained in the UK) and Dr. S. Rajasekaran (trained in the USA) — returned to lead the hospital into a new era. They transformed Ganga into a specialty centre for Orthopaedics and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, attracting patients from across India and over 60 countries worldwide.

The Beginning
Ganga Hospital was established by Dr. J.G. Shanmuganathan and Mrs. Kanakavalli Shanmuganathan with 17 beds and 2 operating theatres. Named in honour of Shri J.S. Gangadharan, it began as a vision to bring quality surgical care to Coimbatore.

The founders' sons — Dr. S. Raja Sabapathy and Dr. S. Rajasekaran — returned after specialist training in the UK and USA. Under their leadership, Ganga transformed into a specialty centre for Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery, expanding to 35 beds and 4 operating theatres.

Microsurgery Training Institute
The Ganga Microsurgery Training Lab was inaugurated, becoming one of Asia's premier training centres for microsurgical techniques. To date, over 3,444 surgeons from around the world have trained here.

Major Expansion
A landmark expansion brought the hospital to 420 beds and 20 operating theatres. New departments were added including Spine Surgery, Hand Surgery, Arthroplasty, Paediatric Orthopaedics, Brachial Plexus Surgery, and Burns. Advanced diagnostics — 1.5T MRI and 16-slice CT — were introduced alongside a 425-seat auditorium.

The latest expansion (B Block) brought total capacity to 650 beds and 38 operating theatres, with state-of-the-art 3T MRI, 16-slice CT, and specialist ICUs. Today, Ganga Hospital performs over 34,000 surgeries annually and serves patients from more than 60 countries.
